Mode of Exam

1) Pen and Paper Based

The test covers listening, reading, and writing skills and is taken at an Authorized IELTS Testing Facility using a pen and paper. The Speaking part is done in person or via video conference with a qualified IELTS examiner at the exam center.

2) Computer Based

This version allows the test to be taken on a computer at a designated IELTS testing facility. The Speaking part is done face-to-face or via video conference with an examiner.

Listening 4 Sections, Total 40 Questions. Each section contains 10 questions. Each right answer = 1 mark. All right answers = Full 9 Band.
Speaking 3 Sections: Introduction, Cue Card, Follow-up Questions. Each right answer = 1 mark. Total 9 Band for speaking with all correct answers.
Reading 3 Sections, Total 40 Questions. Each right answer = 1 mark. Full 9 Band for correct answers.
Writing 2 Sections: Task 1 (letter/chart >150 words), Task 2 (essay >250 words). Task 1 - 33% of total marks, Task 2 - 67% of total marks.

IELTS Scoring Criteria

  • IELTS is graded on a scale of 0 to 9, known as Band Score.
  • Generally, an overall score of at least 6 bands for Bachelor study and 6.5 bands for Master study is required for admission in college or university.

  • In India, paper-based IELTS academic test dates are available on Saturdays, typically twice to four times per month, depending on the location of the test center.
  • For General Training, it is available twice a month (Saturdays and Thursdays).
  • Computer-based test dates are mostly available every day.

IELTS One Skill Retake (only for Computer-based)

  • Only computer-based applicants are eligible to retake one skill.
  • Instead of retaking the entire test, it is beneficial for people to retake just one particular skill (within 60 days of the original exam).
